Chondrocyte Culture Laboratory

A chondrocyte (cartilage cells) culture laboratory was inaugurated at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram, on July 25, 2012. The laboratory is a part of a proposed study to explore the possibility of chondrocyte cell culture in the hospital setting and its utilization in treating cartilage defects in our patients by autologous chondrocyte transplantation, thereby relieving the patients of their symptoms and avoiding the future joint replacement surgeries. This study is being conducted in collaboration with the Biosciences department of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Prasanthi Nilayam.

The study may pave a way to counter problematic joint lesions and improve the quality of life of the  patients by giving them a near natural joint thereby decreasing the morbidity.

A full thickness cartilage defect in joints is a common problem especially in active younger patients that correlates clinically with pain and joint dysfunction. Both osteochondral lesions (injuries to cartilage and subchondral bone) and chondral lesions (isolated defects in cartilage) progress rapidly to osteoarthritis. In severe osteoarthritis the usual treatment is replacement of the joint surfaces as in the total knee replacement for knee joint. However, such prosthesis has a limited lifetime. Furthermore, in younger patients with an active lifestyle the life of the prosthesis is still less and the revision surgeries are frequent.

Autologous chondrocyte transplantation for cartilage defects has been studied extensively in animal and human models and has shown good to excellent results in most of the studies worldwide. The procedure has shown to relieve pain and improve function of the joint, more so, it prevents development of osteoarthritis.
Early identification of these defects and chondrocyte transplantation can prevent subsequent development of osteoarthritis and the need of joint replacement surgery in such patients.
