DNB training in Urology was started in the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in the year 1994. The course is accredited by the National Board of Examinations, Government of India, for imparting training to two candidates every year and to prepare them for taking the examinations conducted by the NBE.
In the 3-year course period, the residents get a hands-on experience of all the aspects of Urology. The course is a mix of academics and practical training in par with international standards. The urology dept has 3 OT`s with 2 c-ram machines, Karl Storz endoscopy and laparoscopy machines, 3 Vallylab cautery machines and 3 endoscopy cameras. Dept is also equipped with Urodynamic machine and Dornier delta lithotripsy unit.
Urology departmental working hours are from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm in OPD and 8.00 am to 4.00 pm in OT. Department in divided in to two units for the working purpose. On an average urology OPD attendance ranges from 150 – 200 per day.
In the first year the residents are taught investigation and open surgery. In the second year, the residents are exposed to endoscopic procedures, while in the third year they gradually gain expertise to perform all the urological procedures.
Regular classes for the residents are held twice a week. The teaching methodology includes seminars and discussions on clinical cases, emergency operations and complications of various operations. Questions appearing in the pervious years’ theory examinations are also discussed.
Eminent practicing urology teachers visit the dept. and train the students regularly.
Residents also get an opportunity have hands on training and to interact expert faculty visiting the department from India and abroad. They are allowed to attend and present papers in the national, zonal conferences and CME`s.
Stipend is paid as prescribed by the National Board of Examinations. In campus single accommodation is provided.
Hospital has a canteen for doctors and other hospital staff providing food at a reasonable price.
Our DNB trainee Dr. N.N. Sridhraran secured the all India gold medal in the year 2004.
The candidate should have passed the MS/NBE degree in General Surgery and qualified in Common Entrance Test of the National Board of Examinations held once in a year in December or January. The selection is based on marks obtained in CET, NBE.
