|Department of Orthopaedics wins best paper award

The faculty of the department of Orthopaedics of Sri Sathya Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram, has won the best paper award at the National Ilizarov Course and Conference , held at Solapur from September 30 to October 2, 2011. The conference was organised by Association for the Study and Application of the Method of Ilizarov International and External Fixation – India, (ASAMI), an apex body in promoting and propagating the Ilizarov methodology in the country and abroad along with Solapur Orthopaedic Society, Maharastra.
The paper titled, “Pre-centralization Soft Tissue Distraction with Ilizarov Apparatus in Radial Club Hand”, was authored by Head of Department, Dr. Kailash Rao and Additional Senior Consultant, Dr. V.R. Vasuki and presented by DNB Resident, Dr. Gurunadh Sarma.
The department of Orthopaedics presented two papers in the conference the second paper being titled “Unicameral Bone Cyst Treated With Ilizarov Methodology”. The second paper was presented by Dr. S. Ravikumar, Senior Resident of the department and also authored by Dr. Kailash Rao and Dr. V.R. Vasuki.
The prize winning paper, “Pre-centralization Soft Tissue Distraction with Ilizarov Apparatus in Radial Club Hand”, discussed the management and treatment of severe congenital deformity of the forearm and hand in children that would left untreated will make them cripple with useless upper limbs throughout their life. The principles of Ilizarov was used in correction of these deformities in children and making their hands back to their function. A series of such cases and their treatment has been carried out at SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, was methodically presented.
The second paper, “Unicameral Bone Cyst Treated With Ilizarov Methodology” discussed the unique method of treatment in proximal femoral bone cyst in a child treated at our department. This was based on the case report of a 13-year-old child who could not walk due to this problem. After treatment with Ilizarov method her deformities were corrected completely and the child was able to walk again.
The faculty members also participated in the deliberations. Dr. Ravikumar, Senior Resident and Dr. Gurunadh Sarma, Post graduate student led by Dr. V.R.Vasuki, Additional Senior Consultant attended the meet and participated in the deliberations apart from presenting the work done in the department.
Dr. Vladimir I Shevtsov, General Director of Russian Ilizarov scientific center for Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Kurgan, Russia, was the course and conference Director. He is the pioneer and the leading Ilizarov surgeon currently in the world. His scientific research and innovations have been the trend setters and landmarks in setting up the present day advances in the field of Ilizarov surgery. Leading orthopaedic surgeons from India participated in the conference.
