On 9th September 1991, Sri Sathya Sai Medical Trust came into being. On 22nd November 1991, exactly as He had declared, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram was inaugurated heralding a new age in healthcare. The hospital came up in a rural setting signalling His intentions that the hospital was to benefit the poor of this country for whom affordable healthcare is a faraway dream.
In the years that followed, Bhagawan set up another super-speciality hospital at Whitefield, Bangalore in January 2001. Two general hospitals established by Him at Prasanthi Nilayam and Whitefield were also brought under the management of the Trust. In April 2006, a novel outreach programme, the Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Hospital began its noble mission of taking affordable secondary healthcare to the rural doorstep.
Bhagawan intended His service projects to serve as a beacon to the world, and people all over the world have been inspired to follow His example to make healthcare available to all. Several examples of such initiatives in India and abroad can be seen in our section We Inspire.
