Department of Orthopaedics

The department was opened at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram (SSSIHMS-PG) as a full service facility on July 11, 2006, providing complete orthopaedic care, inculcating the principles of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The department provides state of the art advanced medical and surgical treatment totally free of cost, irrespective of race, religion, cast, gender, nationality or financial status.


The facility is equipped with most modern high technology equipment and is staffed by well qualified, experienced consultants. The department is approved by the National Board of Examination, New Delhi, for postgraduate training in Orthopaedics. Currently there are six DNB students.

Facilities and Services

Out Patient Facility
About 150 patients are treated everyday in this facility. A separate block is dedicated for screening patients coming to the hospital for the first time. Genuine orthopaedic cases are referred to orthopaedic OPD for further care. As of February 2009, about 65,000 patients have received treatment in the unit. Special dedicated clinics for Paediatric orthopaedics, Ilizarov, spine, arthritis and trauma are conducted on a regular basis.

24- Hour emergency facility
An emergency department with 6 beds and a mini-operation theater provides 24-hour service to all emergencies in orthopaedics with major and minor trauma and other emergencies.

Physiotherapy Unit
A well equipped Physiotherapy section staffed by three full time well trained Physiotherapists provides physiotherapy services at the department.

Inpatient facility
The department has a 40 bedded ward (separate male and female ward). On an average, 7 admissions a day are made to the ward.

Operating facility
The department has 3 modular Operation Theaters fitted with the best equipment.
An 8-bedded post-op recovery room is also attached to it. Currently, eight major surgeries are done a day, adding up to around 3,500 surgeries from the inception of the department. The surgeries performed include:

  • Total Joint Replacements
  • Arthroscopic Surgeries
  • Spine
  • Ilizarov
  • Paediatric orthopaedics
  • Complex deformity corrections
  • Acetabular Trauma

Faculty
There is a full-time faculty of three senior consultants, and one junior consultant. In addition, there are six postgraduate residents, including DNB students, and one in-house medical officer.

Visiting Faculty

Several senior orthopaedic consultants both from India and abroad regularly visit the hospital and perform surgeries and also take part in teaching staying up to 12 weeks at the hospital. A visiting professor of neuro-surgery from the USA also participates in teaching sessions frequently. This provides a different perspective and high quality training to the junior staff and DNB students.
